Osage Selfbows

Osage orange has long been considered a premium bow wood.  Dense and elastic, it can make a narrower bow than many woods (allowing less mass in the bow, and thus more speed), and can take a more reflexed design without chrysalling.  Osage bows can often have cracks and knots in them, and it is part of the bowyer’s art to include such potential problems so that they don’t detract from the functionality and longevity of the bow.  Character and flaws are often part of a self bow’s charm, and perhaps even more so in osage.

We offer custom osage selbows in a variety of styles, including flat bow with rigid handle, flatbow with semi-rigid handle (what I call a “hybrid” handle), elbs, deflex/reflex, etc.

Please allow extra time for us to procure an appropriate osage stave for your particular bow.
